The shark responsible for the death of two Amity natives has been captured and killed.
The shark was caught by two local fishermen and its capture is finally restoring peace to the usually tranquil Amity shores just in time for the Fourth of July.
Reopened beaches come as welcome news to local business owners who are dependent on tourism to make their income. The fishermen responsible for the fish’s death are to be rewarded $3,000.
After brought ashore, the shark was inspected by Matt Hooper, marine biologist from the Woods Hole, Mass., Oceanographic Institute. As one of the world’s most respected experts on sharks, he had been working closely with Amity police in order to bring an end to the killing spree. He identified that shark as a Nurse Shark.
As a safety precaution, shark spotters will be placed in the waters off of the beaches, but the public should, “not be alarmed by the presence,” according to a press release by Amity Police Chief Martin Brody.
