On Tuesday, February 23, UNH Dean of Students Anne Lawing appeared on New Hampshire Public Radio, addressing the problem of underage drinking on campus.
In a segment titled, "Alcohol in Academia," on the The Exchange with Laura Knoy, Lawing and Shiela Lamber, Coordinator of Wellness at Southern New Hampshire University offered their opinions on the hot topic issue of student drinking.
The latest news on the issue comes from Dartmouth College, where town police are attempting to implement undercover sting operations in their efforts to curb underage drinking. Their proposal has faced much opposition from students and from faculty at the college who fear that the use of undercover police will just force drinking underground, causing it to ultimately become more dangerous.
"Students have been drinking as long as we have had students," says Lawing.
She insists that efforts aimed at decreasing the problems surrounding alcohol have been greatly stepped up.
Noting some of the impacts of alcohol on the community, such as missed class, assault, vandalism, and even death, Lawing says that these "are just unacceptable."
"We are just, frankly, tired."
Lambert notes that most students admit to drinking four or fewer drinks a week. She feels that this data shows signs of positive change.
Programs are in place to work with young people-- to encourage them to make positive choices. Lawing says that students can choose to not drink and "still have fun and enjoy the college experience."
