The group dons layer upon layer, anything to protect them from the bitter chill of the freezing air that awaits. They run willingly and enthusiastically, warmed by the conversation and upbeat spirit of the pack. These hearty souls comprise the Upper Quad Running Club.
The group was started by hall director, Pam Scott, and senior resident assistant, Gilly Barbato. As avid runners, they hoped to share their passion for exercise with others. Scott is excited that the reality of the club has finally come into fruition just in time for second semester. They have so far completed 4 runs and have another scheduled for Friday.
Those who are concerned that they aren’t in great physical shape need not worry. “It’s for any ability level,” notes Barbato. The club splits up into groups based on preferred pace and distance. “It’s definitely a judgement free zone,” she attests.
To date, the group has mainly consisted of resident assistants, but it is their goal to have at least ten residents regularly participating by the end of the month.
Resident assistant, CJ Gauthier, believes that people have been discouraged by the cold temperatures, but is optimistic that interest in the group will increase as the mercury rises. “The cold is not necessarily a bad thing,” participant, Mary Nolin, argues. The low temperatures force the group to maintain a slow pace, which is welcome news for beginners.
Nolin joined because she loves exercise. “It makes you feel so good and running with other people is so much better.” She believes that it is a great way to work out, while making friends in the process.
Right now the group is still in its preliminary stages. The members are working to promote the club. They are accomplishing this through flyers, bulletin boards, a Facebook group, and by word of mouth.
The future of the club appears promising. As the biggest dorm on campus, the Upper Quad houses over 500 residents. These residents come from various backgrounds and demonstrate diverse interests. Despite these differences, the desire for increased fitness level and for meeting new people are goals most all share.
For anyone who is on the fence about joining the group, Scott’s message is this-- “At least give it a shot... Let’s hit the ground running.”
